From 7 to 12 November 1913, converging weather systems produced hurricane-force winds, steep waves, snow, and whiteout conditions across the Great Lakes. Ships sailed with limited forecasts and no modern radar. More than two hundred sailors died, numerous vessels vanished with all hands, and dozens more were wrecked or stranded in the region's most destructive recorded shipping storm.

The lakes remained ice-free and busy with late-season ore, coal, and grain traffic. Forecasts traveled by telegraph, flags, and limited wireless; observations were sparse over open water. Long steel freighters could carry enormous cargo but faced torsion, icing, hatch failure, and poor visibility when short, closely spaced freshwater waves struck from changing directions.
