During the night of 23 January 1556, a major earthquake struck the Wei River basin in Ming China, with its most severe effects around Huaxian in Shaanxi. Shaking, surface rupture, landslides, ground failure, and the collapse of masonry buildings and cave dwellings devastated a wide region. Historical registration losses later produced the often-cited figure of 830,000 dead or missing, but that total is not a modern direct fatality count.
