On 26 December 2004, a magnitude 9.1 megathrust earthquake ruptured a vast section of the seafloor west of northern Sumatra. The displacement generated tsunami waves that struck Indonesia within minutes and crossed the Indian Ocean to Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, East Africa, and other shores. More than 230,000 people died across multiple countries. The catastrophe transformed tsunami science, warning systems, coastal education, and international disaster coordination.

Subduction along the Sunda Trench stored strain over a long plate boundary. Coastal populations, holiday visitors, fishing communities, and dense cities occupied low ground around the ocean basin. The Pacific had an established warning system, but the Indian Ocean lacked an equivalent regional network. Many people did not recognize prolonged shaking, sudden sea retreat, or an unusual roar as natural warnings to move immediately uphill.

A rupture extended roughly northward from off Sumatra for more than a thousand kilometers, vertically displacing the seabed. Broad waves traveled rapidly across deep water and grew as they entered shallow coastal zones. Northern Sumatra received little time between shaking and inundation. Farther away, hours existed in principle, but detection, authority, communications, local language, and evacuation systems were not connected well enough to warn many communities.

Families were separated, bodies and records were lost, and millions were displaced or affected. Local rescue began before enormous international relief operations arrived. Indian Ocean states created a coordinated tsunami warning and mitigation system under UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Seismic networks, sea-level gauges, regional advisory providers, national warning centers, maps, drills, signs, and community education expanded. Research used field deposits, survivor accounts, satellite imagery, and modeling to reconstruct the waves. Rebuilt coastlines also reveal contested choices between risk reduction, tourism, housing, fishing access, and memory.
