On 22 May 2011, a rain-wrapped EF5 tornado crossed Joplin, Missouri, with winds estimated above 200 miles per hour. It destroyed neighborhoods, schools, businesses, fire stations, and St. John's Regional Medical Center along a dense urban path. One hundred sixty-one people died from the tornado, making it the deadliest single United States tornado since modern records began.

Weather forecasters recognized severe-storm potential and issued watches and warnings, but residents had varying shelter access and warning habits. Joplin had many wood-frame homes, commercial buildings, and facilities without purpose-built safe rooms. Repeated siren tests and prior warnings had encouraged some people to seek visual confirmation before sheltering, dangerous for a rain-wrapped storm.

A supercell rapidly intensified west of Joplin and produced a tornado that expanded from a narrow funnel into a wide violent circulation within minutes. The National Weather Service issued a warning at 5:17 p.m.; sirens sounded, then the tornado entered the city around 5:41. Rain and low cloud obscured its shape until debris and extreme wind arrived.
