During a silent-film screening on 28 January 1922, the snow-loaded roof of Washington's Knickerbocker Theatre collapsed onto the balcony and orchestra seats. The large neighborhood theater used an innovative flat roof supported by steel trusses and connections embedded in masonry. A severe coastal storm later called the Knickerbocker Storm deposited more than two feet of snow in Washington. Other venues closed or cleared roofs, but the theater continued its Saturday program for several hundred patrons.
