On 5 August 1949, fifteen Forest Service smokejumpers and a local fire guard confronted a small wildfire in Mann Gulch. Wind and terrain drove a sudden blowup that raced uphill through dry grass. Foreman Wag Dodge lit an escape fire and lay in its burned area, but the crew did not follow. Dodge and two others survived; thirteen firefighters died.

Most continued toward the ridge; only Sallee and Rumsey reached a rockslide and survived. Searchers recovered bodies along the slope, and Norman Maclean later reconstructed each movement in Young Men and Fire.
