On 21 November 1980, an electrical ground fault ignited combustible material in a restaurant at the MGM Grand hotel and casino. Fire swept through the unsprinklered casino level while smoke traveled up elevators, stairs, shafts, and building joints into the twenty-six-story tower. Eighty-five people died, most from smoke inhalation far above the fire.
