On the night of 8 October 1871, extreme wildfire swept through northeastern Wisconsin and parts of Michigan, destroying Peshtigo and numerous smaller communities. More than one thousand people died, making it the deadliest recorded wildfire in United States history. Drought, logging slash, land-clearing fires, strong winds, and a connected industrial forest landscape produced flame spread and heat that overwhelmed nearly every available form of refuge.

Logging and settlement had transformed the region's pine forest. Cut branches, tops, sawdust, wooden roads, fences, mills, and dry peat connected town and countryside with fuel. Smaller fires had burned for weeks during a severe dry season. People were accustomed to smoke and local burning, which made it difficult to distinguish another manageable fire from the onset of an extreme regional event.

A strong weather system intensified existing fires on 8 October. Wind drove multiple fronts through slash and forest, lofting embers across clearings and producing extreme convective behavior. The precise ignition cannot be assigned to one spark because fires were already widespread. In Peshtigo, the advancing front reached homes, factories, lumber, and streets with little warning and no organized escape route.
