The 1933 Long Beach Earthquake
At 5:54 p.m. on 10 March 1933, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake ruptured the Newport–Inglewood Fault offshore. Unreinforced masonry failed across Long Beach, Compton, and the Los Angeles Basin, killing 120 people. Damage to scores of schools—empty because classes had ended—made the catastrophe an immediate test of whether California would regulate construction for earthquakes.
What existed before
Southern California's population had expanded faster than seismic standards. Many commercial buildings and schools used unreinforced brick, poor mortar, and inconsistent inspection. Some experts minimized the hazard from faults within the Los Angeles Basin, even as a new local instrument network was beginning to record strong motion.
Trigger and cause
Subsurface rupture propagated northwest along the Newport–Inglewood Fault for roughly twenty-five kilometers in modern reconstructions. About ten seconds of shaking toppled parapets and walls, damaged utilities, triggered liquefaction, and caused severe failures where construction and soil were vulnerable.
Aftermath
Falling masonry killed many people who ran from buildings. Fires and broken water and gas lines complicated response. Seventy schools were destroyed and about 120 damaged; the late-afternoon timing prevented the mass casualties that occupied classrooms could have produced.
Why it matters
The earthquake converted visible school collapse into enforceable public policy. Its legacy shows that a moderate-magnitude event can become deadly through ordinary construction, and that regulation can preserve the lesson before the next generation occupies the same kinds of buildings.
