The Camp Fire
On 8 November 2018, electrical equipment on a Pacific Gas and Electric transmission line ignited vegetation near Pulga, California. Wind drove the Camp Fire through the Feather River canyon and into Paradise with extraordinary speed. Eighty-five people died, more than 18,000 structures were destroyed, and nearly the entire town was displaced in the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history.
Background
Northern California had experienced prolonged drought, tree mortality, hotter fire seasons, and development in the wildland–urban interface. PG&E's century-old Caribou-Palermo line crossed steep vegetation and had documented hardware risk. Paradise depended on limited ridge roads; prior plans used evacuation zones but did not prepare to evacuate the entire population at once under failing power and communications.
What happened
A worn C-hook failed on Tower 27/222, allowing energized equipment to arc and shower molten material into dry fuels at 6:33 a.m. Strong northeast winds rapidly pushed fire toward Concow and Paradise. Spot fires crossed roads and canyons miles ahead. Many residents received late, incomplete, or no official warning before smoke turned morning dark.

Aftermath
Roads gridlocked as fire burned vehicles, power poles, homes, and escape routes; residents drove through flame or sheltered in cleared spaces. Firefighters conducted evacuations and structure defense while becoming trapped themselves. Search teams later sifted ash for remains. Survivors scattered across shelters, vehicles, hotels, and distant housing markets, and debris cleanup removed toxic ash and foundations.
Long-term consequences
PG&E pleaded guilty to eighty-four counts of involuntary manslaughter and one unlawful-fire count, entered bankruptcy, and funded a victim trust. California expanded utility shutoffs, grid hardening, inspection, evacuation planning, and wildfire insurance reforms. Paradise rebuilt selectively with changed population, safer construction, broadband, sirens, and continuing debate over affordability and risk.

One of the eighty-five official victims died later from burn injuries; some early missing-person lists were much larger because displacement disrupted contact. Climate change did not ignite the fire directly but contributed to regional fuel aridity and extreme-season context.
