The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Just after midnight on 24 March 1989, the tanker Exxon Valdez struck Bligh Reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound and spilled about 11 million gallons of crude oil. Delayed and inadequate containment let oil spread across remote, biologically rich shorelines, killing wildlife and disrupting fishing and Alaska Native communities. It was then the largest tanker spill in United States waters.

Background

The Trans-Alaska Pipeline delivered North Slope crude to tankers at Valdez. Industry and regulators had promised rapid spill response, but equipment, staffing, exercises, and contingency capacity had eroded. Shipping lanes required crews to maneuver around ice, and Exxon Valdez sailed with fatigue, reduced staffing, and a master whose alcohol use later dominated public discussion.

What happened

The tanker left its traffic lane to avoid ice. Captain Joseph Hazelwood departed the bridge after giving course instructions; Third Mate Gregory Cousins did not turn back in time, and the vessel grounded at 12:04 a.m. Multiple cargo tanks ruptured. Vessel traffic systems did not prevent the deviation, and response barges were not ready to deploy promptly.

Aftermath

Oil escaped fastest during the first hours while wind and current spread it beyond containment. Thousands of workers used booms, skimmers, hot-water washing, dispersants, and shoreline labor, sometimes causing additional ecological disturbance. Fisheries closed, tourism and subsistence harvest suffered, and cleanup stress affected workers and communities. Exxon fired Hazelwood and mounted a huge legal and public-relations response.

Long-term consequences

The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 strengthened liability, response planning, federal authority, and double-hull requirements. Criminal and civil cases produced fines, restoration funds, and punitive damages later reduced by the Supreme Court. Some wildlife populations recovered, while pockets of oil and harm to particular species and cultural practices persisted for decades.

Significance

Exxon Valdez shows that prevention and first-hour readiness matter more than spectacular cleanup once oil enters complex coastlines. Blaming one captain alone obscures staffing, oversight, traffic control, vessel design, corporate preparedness, and government readiness that allowed a navigational error to become regional disaster.

What remains today

Bligh Reef's navigation light, shoreline monitoring plots, residual subsurface oil, museums, damaged-vessel records, photographs, court archives, and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council's long studies preserve the event. Many affected shores are remote and culturally sensitive.

Uncertainty

The official estimate is 10.8–11 million gallons, based on tank calculations rather than direct measurement. Wildlife mortality totals are modeled because most carcasses were never found. Recovery differs by species and definition, and residual oil presence does not mean every shoreline remains acutely toxic.
