A volcanic fissure opened beside the town on Heimaey shortly before 2 a.m. on 23 January 1973. Nearly the entire population of more than five thousand evacuated within hours, largely using the fishing fleet already in harbor. Lava and tephra destroyed or buried hundreds of homes. Heimaey was the only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago and depended heavily on its sheltered fishing harbor. The nearby Surtsey eruption had made volcanic activity familiar, but no historical eruption had occurred inside the town landscape. Most boats happened to be in port after poor weather, creating evacuation capacity that had not been deliberately staged.
