Heimaey Eldfell Eruption

A volcanic fissure opened beside the town on Heimaey shortly before 2 a.m. on 23 January 1973. Nearly the entire population of more than five thousand evacuated within hours, largely using the fishing fleet already in harbor. Lava and tephra destroyed or buried hundreds of homes. A large seawater-pumping operation cooled advancing lava and helped preserve Iceland's most important fishing harbor.

Heimaey was the only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago and depended heavily on its sheltered fishing harbor. The nearby Surtsey eruption had made volcanic activity familiar, but no historical eruption had occurred inside the town landscape. Most boats happened to be in port after poor weather, creating evacuation capacity that had not been deliberately staged.

An earthquake swarm began less than a day before the eruption. During the night, a fissure opened only a few hundred meters east of homes and rapidly lengthened. A reduced workforce stayed to protect infrastructure, clear heavy tephra from roofs, and operate pumps. As lava advanced toward the harbor entrance, crews sprayed enormous quantities of seawater onto flow fronts and channels. The method slowed and redirected parts of the lava while natural flow geometry also changed, leaving the harbor narrowed but functional.
