The I-35W Mississippi River Bridge Collapse
During evening rush hour on 1 August 2007, the Interstate 35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed. Vehicles, workers, and roadway sections fell into the river and onto its banks. Thirteen people died and 145 were injured. Investigators found that undersized gusset plates from the original design fractured under bridge weight, traffic, construction equipment, and material stockpiles.
Background
The 1967 steel deck-truss bridge carried far more traffic than originally expected and had been classified structurally deficient because of condition, though that label did not identify imminent collapse. Repeated inspections documented cracking and corrosion but did not calculate the capacity of original gusset plates. A resurfacing project placed heavy equipment and aggregate above a critical node.
What happened
At 6:05 p.m., gusset plates at a central truss connection bowed and fractured. The deck truss lacked redundancy, so local connection failure propagated through the main span. About 111 vehicles and eighteen construction workers were on the bridge. A school bus stopped on a fallen section and its occupants escaped with help.

Long-term consequences
Minnesota replaced the bridge in fourteen months with extensive monitoring. Federal guidance required owners to check gusset-plate capacity during load-rating and account for construction loads. The collapse accelerated inspection funding debates and scrutiny of fracture-critical bridges, but the nationwide maintenance backlog and evolving climate loads remain unresolved.

The bridge was inspected regularly, yet the fatal defect was a design calculation hidden in plain sight. I-35W shows that condition inspection cannot substitute for knowing whether every original component has adequate capacity under current dead load, traffic, and temporary construction staging.
What remains today
The replacement bridge, Remembrance Garden, preserved deck section, survivor objects, NTSB wreckage maps, traffic video, inspection files, emergency recordings, and Minnesota Historical Society oral histories preserve the crossing. Piers and river geography connect memorial and functional infrastructure.
