Lac-Mégantic Rail Disaster
Early on 6 July 2013, an unattended freight train carrying crude oil rolled downhill from Nantes, Quebec, and derailed at high speed in downtown Lac-Mégantic. Tank cars ruptured and the oil ignited, killing 47 people, destroying much of the town center, forcing a mass evacuation, and contaminating land and water. Canada's investigation identified a chain of operational, equipment, organizational, and regulatory failures.
