Before dawn on 28 December 1908, a major earthquake struck the Strait of Messina between Sicily and Calabria. Violent shaking destroyed much of Messina and Reggio Calabria, and tsunami waves reached both shores within minutes. Collapsed masonry, fires, severed communications, and the coastal inundation made the event one of the deadliest European disasters of the modern era.

Earlier earthquakes were part of regional memory, but construction quality varied and there was no modern system for seismic design, coordinated warning, or rapid mass rescue across the strait.
