Messina Earthquake and Tsunami

Before dawn on 28 December 1908, a major earthquake struck the Strait of Messina between Sicily and Calabria. Violent shaking destroyed much of Messina and Reggio Calabria, and tsunami waves reached both shores within minutes. Collapsed masonry, fires, severed communications, and the coastal inundation made the event one of the deadliest European disasters of the modern era.

Italian and foreign naval crews, medical teams, and relief ships reached the ruined cities and evacuated survivors. Temporary camps spread beyond the disaster zone, and many residents left Sicily and Calabria permanently.
