Tenerife Airport Disaster
On 27 March 1977, KLM and Pan American Boeing 747s collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport on Tenerife. Diversions after a bombing at Gran Canaria had crowded the smaller airport, and fog reduced visibility as aircraft taxied on the runway. The KLM aircraft began takeoff without clearance while the Pan Am aircraft remained ahead, killing 583 people and leaving 61 survivors.
