The 1994 Northridge Earthquake
At 4:30 a.m. on 17 January 1994, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake ruptured a previously unmapped blind thrust fault beneath the San Fernando Valley. Violent shaking collapsed apartments and freeway structures, damaged hospitals, ruptured utilities, and exposed unexpected fractures in welded steel frames. A widely used USGS accounting attributes 57 deaths, more than 9,000 injuries, and displacement of more than 20,000 people to the earthquake.

The Northridge Meadows apartment collapse caused sixteen deaths, while other people died in buildings, vehicles, and from quake-related medical events. Sections of Interstate 5, State Route 14, and Interstate 10 failed. Shelters, inspections, federal disaster assistance, temporary transport, and enormous repair programs reshaped the region for months and years.
Long-term consequences
Engineers revised standards for steel moment frames, concrete buildings, freeway bridges, apartments, and nonstructural systems. The earthquake accelerated hazard mapping, hospital and transportation retrofit, insurance reform, and study of blind thrust faults. Its economic cost made urban resilience a national policy issue.
