Christchurch Earthquake

At 12:51 p.m. on 22 February 2011, a shallow magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck close to central Christchurch during a working day. Exceptionally strong ground motion, liquefaction, rockfall, falling masonry, and major building collapses killed 185 people. The Canterbury Television building collapse caused 115 deaths. The earthquake was part of the sequence that began in September 2010, but its proximity, depth, timing, and direction made this shock far more deadly.
