The Hebgen Lake Earthquake and Madison Canyon Slide

Near midnight on 17 August 1959, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck west of Yellowstone National Park. Faulting tilted roads and cabins around Hebgen Lake, while a massive rockslide swept across Madison Canyon, burying a campground and damming the river. Twenty-eight people died. The impounded water created Earthquake Lake and threatened a second disaster if the unstable natural dam failed.

Background

Vacationers filled campgrounds along the Madison River during peak summer season. The region was known for geothermal activity but not widely understood as capable of a major tectonic earthquake. Hebgen Dam held a large reservoir upstream, and steep, fractured mountain slopes overlooked a narrow canyon with only one principal road.

What happened

Normal faulting suddenly displaced the crust beneath the Madison Valley. Ground movement generated waves in Hebgen Lake, damaged the dam, and shook tens of millions of tons of rock from Sheep Mountain. The slide crossed the canyon in less than a minute, burying tents, cars, people, road, and river beneath deep debris.

Aftermath

Survivors climbed onto the slide and high ground in darkness while aftershocks and rising water isolated hundreds. Forest Service smokejumpers parachuted in with supplies, and aircraft evacuated injured campers. The Army Corps cut a spillway through the slide to lower the new lake gradually while engineers monitored both natural and constructed dams.

Long-term consequences

The event advanced understanding of Intermountain West seismicity, earthquake-triggered landslides, seiches, and multi-hazard response. Earthquake Lake became a permanent geographic feature, and federal agencies retained the slide dam with an engineered outlet. Seismic monitoring around Yellowstone and regional building awareness increased.

Hebgen Lake was not one hazard but a chain: fault rupture produced shaking, water oscillation, dam damage, landslide, isolation, and new flooding risk. Its preserved landforms let visitors read that cascading sequence directly in the terrain.

What remains today

The Earthquake Lake Visitor Center overlooks the bare slide scar, memorial boulder, drowned trees, and lake. Fault scarps, tilted structures, damaged highway segments, USGS surveys, photographs, and survivor accounts preserve an unusually legible earthquake landscape.
