North Sea Flood in the Netherlands
During the night of 31 January to 1 February 1953, a severe northwesterly storm and spring tide drove a destructive surge into the low-lying southwestern Netherlands. Dikes failed in many places, water swept through towns and farms, and 1,836 people died in the country. The flood became the central political mandate for new safety standards and the vast system later known as the Delta Works.

Evacuation, pumping, livestock losses, contaminated land, and the repair of more than one breach continued long after the storm. Engineers used large caissons at Ouwerkerk to close the last major opening in November 1953.
