The 1994 Northridge Earthquake
At 4:30 a.m. on 17 January 1994, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake ruptured a previously unmapped blind thrust fault beneath the San Fernando Valley. Violent shaking collapsed apartments and freeway structures, damaged hospitals, ruptured utilities, and exposed unexpected fractures in welded steel frames. A widely used USGS accounting attributes 57 deaths, more than 9,000 injuries, and displacement of more than 20,000 people to the earthquake.
Background
Decades of lessons from Long Beach, San Fernando, and other earthquakes had strengthened codes, but risk remained uneven across older apartments, concrete structures, transportation networks, and utility systems. Engineers expected some faults to be hidden, yet the specific causative thrust had no surface trace and ran directly beneath a dense urban region.

Reverse slip occurred about eighteen kilometers below the valley and lifted a broad area above the buried fault. Strong acceleration near the source acted on buildings before dawn, when most residents were home. Aftershocks followed as emergency crews navigated broken freeways, fire, darkness, and communications failures.

Long-term consequences
