Lisbon Earthquake, Tsunami, and Fire

On All Saints' Day in 1755, a powerful offshore earthquake struck Lisbon at about 9:40 in the morning. Repeated shaking collapsed much of the dense city, a tsunami entered the Tagus waterfront, and fires burned through the ruins for days. Lisbon was a wealthy Atlantic port with roughly two hundred thousand residents, crowded medieval streets, tall masonry buildings, palaces, convents, warehouses, and churches.
