İzmit Earthquake

At 3:02 a.m. on 17 August 1999, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake ruptured the North Anatolian Fault through the densely urbanized and industrialized Marmara region. Shaking, surface faulting, liquefaction, fire, and building collapse devastated Gölcük, İzmit, Adapazarı, Yalova, and nearby areas. More than 17,000 people were reported killed and hundreds of thousands lost safe housing.
