Kashmir Earthquake

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Kashmir region on the morning of 8 October 2005. Muzaffarabad, Balakot, and mountain communities across northern Pakistan were devastated by shaking, building collapse, and thousands of landslides. Nearly 73,000 people died in Pakistan according to later reconstruction records, millions lost homes, and the approaching Himalayan winter turned access and shelter into urgent parts of the disaster.

The collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates had built an active fault system beneath steep, landslide-prone terrain.
